QUESTION:

I think I'm having problems with my modem, what should I do?

POSSIBLE SOLUTION(S):

To find out EXACTLY what type of modem you have:

  1. Click on Start
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Click on Control Panel
  4. Click on Modems
  5. Click on the diagnostics tab
  6. Select the COM (communications) port to the left of the modem
  7. Click MORE INFO. The version is almost ALWAYS listed in the ATI3 section of the results. (ATI1-10 will be displayed.)
The following are common modem brands used in computers:

  • Lucent Winmodem: Usually listed as an LT Winmodem or Lucent Winmodem. You should use MINIMUM version number 5.49. If the version is 4.x or lower than 5.49, the modem MUST be upgraded to 5.49 or higher. The latest versions can be found on our FTP site.
  • PCTel (HCF) modems: Sometimes listed as PCTel, sometimes as HCF, sometimes both are listed together. If they work, great! If not, then we suggest you purchase a more compatible modem. We suggest the LT Winmodem listed above.
  • Conextant (HSP) modems: Sometimes listed as Conextant or Rockwell HSP. This product is at end-of-life and will be discontinued. We suggest replacing your modem with a Lucent Winmodem.
  • 3Com/USR Sportster/Courier modems: These are good modems, but if they have not been upgraded to v.90, they will not connect above 33.6k. Upgrades for most models are available free from http://www.usr.com/.
